Local 1245 Women

Nearly 3,000 women belong to IBEW Local 1245, about 15% of the union's membership. We work in “Physical” as well as “Clerical” job classifications, many of us performing work that was once thought of as “men's work.”

Under IBEW Local 1245 labor agreements, women and men working in the same job classification receive the same pay. We also have the same opportunities to bid up to the higher-paid job classifications.

Local 1245's labor agreements contain language that protect women against discriminatory treatment, and provide grievance procedures to help make sure those protections are enforced. If you are a Local 1245 member with concerns about possible gender-based discrimination, please contact your union Business Representative.

IBEW Local 1245 advances the standard of living for women and our families through the collective bargaining process. Our union also promotes the interests of women and their families through the legislative process, such as the “Paid Family & Medical Leave” law enacted in California.

Women have claimed a solid place in the leadership of IBEW Local 1245. In addition to holding several staff positions, four women currently serve in the union's nine top leadership roles: Recording Secretary, Treasurer, and Central Area Executive Board member. Women also serve as Chair or Recording Secretary at many of the union's 90 units.

This Local 1245 website offers a growing library of articles about pay equity, combating sexual harassment, family leave and other topics of special interest to women, as well as links to organizations with related concerns and resources.

Although the name still says Brotherhood, IBEW Local 1245 has become an equally strong Sisterhood, where women find strength in unity.
